Roald Amundsen (1872 – 1928) was a Norwegian explorer and polar traveler, regarded as the first person to reach both the South Pole and the North Pole. He is best known for the expedition with which he set out on his unsuccessful attempt to be the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen led the first successful expedition through Antarctica on December 14, 1911, becoming the first person to reach both poles.
